“House” is back with Candace Bergin as Cuddy’s mother. I was actually hoping to see House go at her, but drugging her to sleep was pretty cool too. I hadn’t seen the new episode yet when I ran into Lisa Edelstein at the Fox party for the Television Critics Association. I was still thinking about House’s fake apology for lying at work. I think even if he wasn’t really sorry, the gesture of apology kind of retroactively makes it sorry anyway.
As we contemplated the deep themes of “House,” it started to drizzle in Pasadena. Edelstein and I ducked into the bar to finish our banter. I wish I had A-list Hollywood writing behind me like Dr. Gregory House does, but I did my best with the star of one of my favorite shows.
Q: House apologized but he didn’t mean it. Cuddy doesn’t know that yet, but does it matter if he means it or not? Isn’t getting in the habit of doing the right thing make him genuinely sorry?
Lisa Edelstein: Yes, because honestly I think anybody who says they’re sorry has complicated feelings behind those words. It’s just that he’s a little more honest about it.
Q: It’s like the old story about the evil man who pretended to be good all his life. Well, doing good deeds all his life made him good.
LE: I think you’re onto something there because I think actions do speak louder than words. What people think, if we were defined by what we thought, we would all be screwed because it really only matters what you put out there into the world, doesn’t it? But those are very esoteric questions.
Q: Do you guys talk about these themes on the set?
LE: I think they might talk about it in the writer’s room. On the set we act it out. We make it work.
Q: Have you been waiting for this year where Cuddy hooks up with House since the beginning of the show?
LE: No, I’ve had a lot to do along the way. It’s been great with all the twists and turns. I enjoy the tension of the dance between the two characters and a lot of the other things that I’ve gotten to do: this quest for a baby, I’m running a hospital. Certainly it’s been great. It’s been great having this experience.
Q: I always thought Cuddy loved House and all his games.
LE: Right, and they can’t dance around it forever. They needed to get in there, shake it up a little bit, have a scrap, go for it, see what happens.
Q: What’s coming up that you’re excited about?
LE: Candace Bergin is coming on so that was really great. I loved working with her.
Q: Have you been happy with the progression of this season, dealing with each ethical dilemma but not going everywhere right away?
LE: Yeah, yeah. Look, they took on some pretty big subject matters particularly with the relationship so it had to be dealt with in a really subtle way while still maintaining the life of the hospital and the structure of the way we tell stories on “House.” So there was a lot going on.
Q: Do you see this as the beginning of a resolution for “House?”
LE: Possibly. Possibly. I mean, the show really isn’t about finding resolution ultimately. If we find it, then the show’s done. But this is definitely part of his journey.
Q: You’ve probably gotten this question for six years, but would you want House as a doctor?
LE: Absolutely. He knows what he’s doing. He takes a few risks along the way but he gets the right answer in the end.
Q: As the boss, hasn’t Cuddy figured out that it’s never the first thing the team thinks it is?
LE: Hasn’t the team figured that out? Cuddy’s in her office minding her own business. I guess Winnie the Pooh said you have to look in the last place first if you want to find what you’re looking for. Maybe he’s right. Then the show would only be half an hour long. It wouldn’t be as much fun.
Q: I consider “House” the best comedy on TV. What do you think?
LE: I agree with you. It’s hilarious. Sometimes we just choke on our coffee at the script read throughs.
Q: Are you getting to do more outside the hospital this year?
LE: There’s one big episode that has a lot of outer hospital stuff, yeah.
Q: So vague, is that a big spoiler?
LE: I guess it is. We’ve really been limited about what we can talk about. Plus, I don’t really remember what we’ve done because we’ve been on vacation for a month. I have no idea except that Candace Bergin is coming.

TRADUZIONE ARTICOLO: Lisa Edelstein mette sul piatto la storia d'amore su "House"
House è tornato con Candice Bergen nel ruolo della madre della Cuddy. Ho davvero sperato di vedere House alle prese con lei ma drogarla per farla dormire è stato forte lo stesso. Non avevo ancora visto il nuovo episodio quando mi sono imbattuto in Lisa Edelstein al party per i TCA della Fox. Stavo ancora pensando alle false scuse di House per aver mentito sul lavoro. Penso che se anche non fosse stato realmente pentito, il gesto di chiedere scusa a posteriori indica comunque che era dispiaciuto.
Appena abbiamo iniziato a trattare i temi profondi di "House" ha iniziato a piovigginare a Pasadena.
Io e la Edelstein ci siamo ritirati nel bar per finire la nostra chiacchierata scherzosa. Avrei voluto avere una lista A di Hollywood scritta dietro di me come fa il Dr. Gregory House ma ho fatto del mio meglio con la star di uno dei miei show preferiti.
D: House si è scusato ma non intendeva farlo. Cuddy ancora non lo sa ma importa se lui ci credeva o meno? Prendere l'abitudine di fare la cosa giusta non lo rende genuinamente dispiaciuto?
L.E.: Si, perchè onestamente penso che chiunque dica che è dispiaciuto nasconde sentimenti complessi dietro quelle parole. E' solo che lui è un po' più onesto sull'argomento.
D: E' come la vecchia storia dell'uomo cattivo che ha finto di essere buono per tutta la vita. Beh, compiere buone azioni per tutta la vita lo ha reso buono.
L.E.: Penso che tu ci sia andato molto vicino perchè credo che i fatti parlino più delle parole. Ciò che le persone pensano, se fossimo stati definiti per quello che pensiamo, ci renderebbe tutti incasinati perchè davvero conta soltanto ciò che semini nel mondo, non è così? Ma queste sono domande molto mistiche.
D: Voi ragazzi parlate di questi temi sul set?
L.E.: Credo che ne possano parlare nella stanza degli sceneggiatori. Sul set li agiamo. Li facciamo funzionare.
D: Hai aspettato questa stagione in cui Cuddy sta con House sin dall'inizio dello show?
L.E.: No, ho avuto molto da fare lungo il percorso. E' stato fantastico con tutti i tira e molla. Amo la tensione della danza tra i due personaggi e molte delle altre cose che ho dovuto fare: la ricerca di un figlio, dirigere un ospedale. E' stato certamente fantastico. E' fantastico vivere questa esperienza.
D: Ho sempre pensato che Cuddy era innamorata di House e dei suoi modi.
L.E.: Vero e non possono girarci intorno per sempre. Avevano bisogno di vivere questa cosa, di smuoverla un po', di avere uno scontro, di andargli incontro; vedere cosa succede.
D: C'è qualcosa che deve succedere che ti rende entusiasta?
L.E.: L'arrivo di Candice Bergen è stato davvero fantastico. Mi è piaciuto lavorare con lei.
D: Sei stata felice di come sta procedendo questa stagione, con l'occuparsi di ogni dilemma etico ma non arrivando subito al punto?
L.E.: Si, si. Guarda, hanno preso alcune materie piuttosto forti in relazione al rapporto, da trattare in maniera piuttosto sottile, mantentendo la vita dell'ospedale e la struttura sulla quale vengono da sempre raccontate le storie di House. Così c'era un sacco da mandare avanti.
D: Vedi questa cosa come l'inizio di una risoluzione per House?
L.E.: E' possibile. Forse. Voglio dire, lo show non è davvero sul punto di trovare la sua soluzione finale. Se la troviamo poi lo show finisce. Ma questa è sicuramente una parte del suo viaggio.
D: Probabilmente ti sei sentita porre questa domanda per sei anni ma, vorresti House come dottore?
L.E.: Assolutamente si. Sa cosa fa. Si assume qualche rischio lungo la strada ma, alla fine, trova la risposta giusta.
D: Come boss, Cuddy non ha capito che quella giusta, non è mai la prima cosa a cui il team pensa?
L.E.: E il team non l'ha capito? Cuddy è nel suo ufficio pensando ai fatti suoi. Credo che sia stato Winnie the Pooh a dire che se vuoi trovare quello che stai cercando devi prima guardare nell'ultimo posto possibile. Forse ha ragione. Inoltre lo show non durerebbe più di mezz'ora. Non sarebbe più così divertente.
D: Considero House la migliore commedia della Tv. Cosa ne pensi?
L.E.: Sono d'accordo con te. E' divertente. Alcune volte ci va di traverso il caffè durante la lettura dello script.
D: Stai per fare qualcosa di più fuori dall'ospedale quest'anno?
L.E.: C'è un grande episodio che ha molte scene fuori dall'ospedale, si.
D: Così vago... E' un grande spoiler?
L.E.: Credo che lo sia. Siamo stati molto limitati rispetto a ciò di cui possiamo parlare. In più non ricordo davvero cosa abbiamo fatto perchè siamo stati in vacanza per un mese. Non ne ho idea fatta eccezione per l'arrivo di Candice Bergen.
